Academic Decathlon
ACADEC encourages and rewards academic excellence by motivating and
preparing students through cooperative and competitive events. This
is an event held for all secondary students public and private
throughout California. Students, initially, compete at the county
level. The winner of the county competition will go on to compete at
the state level. ACADEC partners with businesses, foundations, and
individuals in cooperation with the educational community and the
county offices of education.
Students compete in teams which consist of nine students from the same
school. Students compete as individuals and as team members in a
series of ten academic tests and demonstrations in the following
categories: mathematics, economics, social science, super quiz, art,
language & literature, music, essay, interview, and speech. In the
music category, the students must learn a repertoire. Annually, the
symphony plays a concert, for the ACADEC contestants, with the ACADEC
repertoire. If the theme for the year is not symphonic music then the
Stockton Symphony will provide ACADEC with the musician and singers to
play that years repertoire.
